New Zealand has been named fifth in the annual report annual report that ranks countries according to their standards of health, education and income. The annual Human Development Index (HDI) , was released by the United Nations Development Programme yesterday.

"All of the main eight measures we use to gauge the current strength of the residential real estate market around New Zealand have strengthened over the past month indicating that slowly but surely on average things are shifting to a sellers market. More and more first home buyers are appearing, prices are perceived to be edging upward, and auction clearance rates are considered to be improving. However there has been a sizeable lift in potential vendors seeking appraisals of their properties, and in the opinion of agents the market balance is only marginally in favour of sellers. BNZ Confidence Survey September 2011

The latest monthly survey of 25,000 Weekly Overview readers has revealed a rise in sentiment to a net 36% optimism about the economy in a year’s time compared with a net 22% optimism in early August. In real estate listings remain short but there is no flood of buyers, construction remains constrained with rising concern about impediments to rebuilding Christchurch, while exporters are expressing some but generally not a huge amount of concern about the NZ dollar.Read or download the complete report.
